Aran knitting (sometimes referred to as Irish fisherman knitting) features distinctive, highly textured patterns of cables and ropes. It is thought by many to be an ancient form of family identification, but it actually had its beginnings among the inhabitants of the Aran Islands in the early 20th century. The first known patterned sweater from Aran dates to about 1930, it is in the National Museum in Dublin. While most often associated with sweaters, this technique of working combinations of stitches and patterns in a solid color (usually white) can also be used to beautiful effect in other knitted items, such as afghans.
This rare vintage circa 1986 design for needlepoint artists by Gloria Kahn for Dimensions very closely mimics the hand knitted look~ beautifully detailed in a handsome assortment of textured stitches, this lovely stocking will brighten your holiday hearth for many a Christmas!
